Since opening its doors to the Metro West communities in 2005, Advanced Sports Therapy (AST) has grown to be a leader in Physical Therapy and Sports Rehabilitation. With close relationships with many local orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, physiatrists, neurologists and primary care physicians, AST receives patient referrals from New England Baptist Hospital, Newton-Wellesley Hospital, Children’s Hospital, Tufts Medical Center, Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital and Beth Israel Hospital, to name a few. Additionally, AST has bolstered its strong community presence with relationships with Wellesley Country Club, Wellesley College and Dreamfar High School Marathon team. The Wellesley clinic provides state-of-the-art rehabilitative services for pre- and post-operative patients, athletes with sprains/strains, individuals with fractures and musculoskeletal pain, as well as many others. Will Austin, PT, DPTContact Will
Will first became aware of the field of physical therapy after an ACL rupture sustained while skiing. After surgery, he felt at home in the rehab atmosphere alongside other active individuals working to return to activities they were passionate about. He attended and graduated cum laude from Northeastern University with a Doctorate of Physical Therapy. During his clinical education he has had the opportunity to train in Pilates-based physical therapy. He is a licensed physical therapist in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and attends monthly Manual Therapy and Shoulder Special Interest Group meetings through the APTA of Massachusetts. Will is Graston Technique certified and has had training in the Maitland-Austrailian Physiotherapy Approach. He is also currently pursuing an orthopedic specialty certification from the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties.
Debra Band, PTContact Debra
Debra is one of the original owners of Orthopedic & Sports Physical Therapy Associates/Advanced Sports Therapy. She graduated from Northeastern University with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy. She is a licensed physical therapist in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and a member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), Sports and Orthopedic sections. Debra is also an assistant clinical instructor at Tufts University School of Medicine. Debra assists Orthopedic Surgeons in designing post-operative protocols. Also, Deb is a co-author of "Physical Therapy Management of Knee Osteoarthritis in the Middle-Aged Athlete" in the Sports Medicine Arthroscopic Review research journal.
Kanella Karatasakis, PT, MSContact Kanella
Kanella graduated from Northeastern University with a Master's Degree in Physical Therapy and has been working for Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy since graduation. She is a licensed physical therapist in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. She treats patients at OSPT in Boston and at AST in Wellesley.
Scott Kuhn, PT, MS, ATCContact Scott
Scott is a graduate of The Ohio State University where he received a Bachelor's Degree in Athletic Training and Master's Degree in Physical Therapy. He is licensed in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as both a physical therapist and certified athletic trainer, and is an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and the APTA of Massachusetts.
Scott performs duties in the Wellesley clinic as the clinic manager while also coordinating the clinical education for students at Advanced Sports Therapy. While Scott has worked with many collegiate and professional athletes thought his career, he enjoys treating patients of all ages; including adolescent athletes who are trying to improve their sports performance or recover from an injury, as well as seniors hoping to prevent falls, become more active and/or maintain their independence.
He has received advanced training in spinal mobilization and manipulation through a series of Maitland post-graduate educational courses. Scott has also completed the Foundation Course for Integrative Dry Needling and utilizes dry needling to treat a variety of neuromuscular and pain related disorders. Scott has training in fitting patients for both semi-custom and custom orthotics.
Scott is also a published author in Sports Medicine Arthroscopic Review and Centerpoint Magazine.
Brett MacLennan PT, DPT, MS, OCSContact Brett
Brett holds a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from MGH-Institute of Health Professions, Master of Science in Applied Anatomy and Physiology from Boston University, and a Bachelor of Science in Food and Nutrition from Framingham State University. In addition, in 2015 he completed an orthopedic residency at the University of Delaware and is an American Board Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS) Orthopedic Certified Specialist.
He is a licensed physical therapist in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), APTA Orthopedic section, APTA Education section, and American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists (AAOMPT). He was recently elected to a two year term for the APTA Massachusetts Assembly of Representatives. He has received additional training in Maitland based spinal and peripheral joint treatment, as well as additional training in diagnosis and management of concussions.
He has experience working as a teaching assistant/lab instructor in the physical therapy departments at the University of Delaware and MGH Institute of Health Professions. He is an APTA Certified Clinical Instructor and has been a clinical instructor for multiple sets of doctor of physical therapy students. In addition, he has been a guest lecturer at University of Delaware’s case rounds presenting on Evaluation and Management of a Patient with Repeated Atraumatic Temporomandibular Dislocations and has presented nationally on the subject of temporomandibular patient management as well.
Brett has experience treating patients with a wide range of orthopedic issues ranging from common joint pain to concussion and temporomandibular patients. His treatment approach is to develop an evidence based treatment plan with the patient’s goals in mind to help them achieve their desired outcome.
Matt Penney, PT, DPT, SCS, ATCContact Matt
Matt is the owner of Advanced Sports Therapy while also the owner of Sports Rehabilitation Unlimited in Middleton, MA. He is a licensed physical therapist and athletic trainer in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Biology from Tufts University, a Master's Degree in Physical Therapy from Columbia University and a Doctor Degree in Physical Therapy from Northeastern University.
Matt is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA), American Association of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy (AAOMPT) and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). Matt is a Board Member/Treasurer of the Private Practice Special Interest Group (SIG), while also participating regularly in the bimonthly Shoulder and Manual Therapy SIG meetings
Matt treats patients at AST in Wellesley, while also providing physical therapy services at Wellesley College Health Services. He is a Level 1 Certified Golf Fitness Instructor through the Titleist Performance Institute and works closely with the Wellesley Country Club Fitness Center providing rehabilitation services for its members. Matt is also an original member of the Board of Directors for the Dreamfar High School Marathon Team, a locally-based organization dedicated to supporting athletes in marathon training and development. In addition, Matt is a published author in the Sports Medicine Arthroscopic Review and Orthopedic Physical Therapy Practice journals.
Lynda Stockwell is the Office and Billing Manager in Wellesley. She is responsible for all aspects of patient registration, insurance information, billing procedures and office management. After graduating from Bucknell University with a bachelor's degree in Economics, Lynda spent many years working in the property and casualty insurance industry for companies both large and small. She brings to us a wealth of business experience and insurance industry knowledge. She has taken classes in medical billing and coding and earned a certification in medical coding. Lynda also brings a unique perspective on the patient experience. Lynda was initially introduced to the company as a patient in the Boston clinic. After expressing her love of sports and her interest in helping others, she was encouraged to join the company. Lynda will be involved in all business aspects of the Wellesley clinic.
Ashley Vitale, PT, DPT, ATCContact Ashley
Ashley holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training from Endicott College and a Doctor Degree in Physical Therapy from Sacred Heart University. She is a licensed physical therapist and athletic trainer in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Ashley regularly attends the Shoulder and Manual Therapy Special Interest Group meetings sponsored by the American Physical Therapy Association of Massachusetts. During her clinical experiences, Ashley had the opportunity to work with athletes at the professional level including NFL and MLB, as well as international soccer and rugby teams. Ashley uses her background in sports medicine to incorporate techniques and promote functional movements with all of her patients. As an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA), and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), Ashley integrates the most up-to date evidence based treatment strategies when working with her patients.
Morgan WilsonContact Morgan
Morgan Wilson is the Front Desk Associate in Wellesley. She graduated from California State University, Sacramento with a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and a concentration in Therapeutic Rehabilitation. During Morgan’s time at the university she worked at the on-campus recreation facility as an Equipment Desk Attendant specializing in customer service and was soon after promoted to a supervisor role where she ran her own department. Morgan will be involved in assisting patients with scheduling and all other aspects of customer service.
